Grace Hopper 2006

The Grace Murray Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) Making Waves, held October 4-7, in San Diego, CA, is expected to attract about 900 registrants. GHC 06 is the sixth in a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities.

Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields. Shirley Tilghman, President of Princeton University, will give the Keynote address. The program includes an Academic Leadership Forum, dedicated to former UCSC Chancellor Denise Denton.

Sixteen students from Berkeley's EECS Department will attend. CS Graduate Student Hayley Iben has been selected to present her research on computer graphics at the Ph.D. Forum. Hayley is the President of the Computer Science Graduate Student Association, and former Co-President of WICSE. Among the attendees are three undergraduates, and 13 graduate students. The current Co-Presidents of WICSE, Juliet Holwill and Bonnie Kirkpatrick, are among those participating.

Dr. Sheila Humphreys will also attend to represent the College. Berkeley is a major sponsor of the Hopper Conference, thanks to Dean A. Richard Newton.
