Grading

The class has 7 reading assignments, 4 graded homework assignments, a midterm and a final exam. The combined homework grades will make up 50% of your grade, the midterm will count 20%, and the final will count for the remaining 30% of your grade. The assignments and exams are similar to, but in some sections different than, those used by Professor Patterson, so do not be alarmed if you find Prof. Patterson talking about a section of an assignment which does not seem to correspond to your assignments.

Your consultant, Joe Gebis, offers this advice to all students:

"Please send me e-mails anytime or call me during the office hours if you are experiencing difficulty with any aspect of the course. We can work through these problems together."

Homework distribution and submission

Assignments as well as the due dates will be announced on-line through the class web page at:
http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~n252/sp07/homework.htm

Homework and reading assignments should be submitted electronically by email to Isabel Blanco (miblanco@berkeley.edu), in the format of a Microsoft Word or PDF file, before the end of the day (Pacific Time) of the due date. If there is difficulty with electronic submission, you may notify the course consultant, and mail or fax the assignment to the CalView NTU office.

Also, the CalVIEW office asks that you put your name and the course number (CS 252 in our case) and the homework number on anything you email or turn into the office via fax or mail. They receive a lot of correspondence from students and it can be difficult for them to decipher homework when there is no name, homework number or class name on the document. Also, please make a copy of everything you send, in case work disappears en route.

Exam administration

The midterm and the final exams are both open-book and open-note. These exams will be distributed to the exam proctors before the exam week. During the exam week you will schedule a time to take the test. The finished exams should be mailed back to the CalView NTU office postmarked by the date shown on the syllabus.

Late work

All homework is due on the dates specified on the syllabus. A late assignment will lose 20% of the grade for each day it was submitted after the due date. However, it is understandable that most NTU engineers/students are trying to balance this class with unpredictable work demands. In occasions when such circumstances occur, please contact the course consultant ahead of time to find out if it is possible to get extensions. Note that in all cases, you must request an extension BEFORE the due date.

Cheating

This should go without saying, but for the record: it is essential that you do your own work. Everyone is welcome to consult with others to discuss the problems, but you must do your own assignments. The one area in which the CalView NTU office is NOT flexible is in terms of the necessary integrity.
