Field-Emission Displays (FEDs)
Vacuum displays which operate similarly to CRTs
cold emission of electrons from cathodes
- a matrix array of metal or Si microtips (small, sharp cones)
- >ᡂ microtips/pixel => redundancy and reliability
- thin film diamond cathode
electrons accelerated through a grid to the anode
- activate phosphors at the anode to produce light
anode voltage: few hundred volts or several kV
passive-matrix addressed
- diode, triode, or tetrode vacuum tubes
