EE192: Mechatronics Design Lab

Final Race

The races will be carried out using NATCAR rules for timing (best run in 5 minutes, with timeout and second try with max of 2 minutes).

Round 1

Round 1 will be scored out of 10 points as follows:

6 points Moves under own power
6.5 points Makes first turn
7 points Completes 1/2 of the track in < 5 minutes
8 points Completes whole track in < 5 minutes
about 0.3 m/s
9 points Completes whole track in 2 minutes or less
about 0.8 m/s
>9 points For cars which are fast and/or well-stabilized

The final point, once you score 9 points based on time, will be awarded on a deductions system as follows, floored at zero:

-0.3 points Twitchy steering
-0.3 points Goes wide on curves
-0.3 points Oscillatory step response
-0.3 points Over 60 sec
about 1.6 m/s
-0.5 points Hits cone(s)

Round 2

Must run both directions!!!

You can run multiple times in either direction, but must complete each direction at least once to get points for running “full track”. (i.e. 1 x CW and 4 x CCW counts as full track but only running 4 x CCW counts as half track).

Total length is 400 feet (about 200 feet each direction).
Assumed coefficent of friction 0.5, min turn radius 3 ft.
The times (120,100,70) presented below for “whole track” are for Time = min(CW) + min(CCW)
Round 2 will be scored out of 20 points as follows:

12 points Moves under own power
13 points Makes first turn
15 points Completes 1/2 of the track in < 5 minutes
16 points Completes whole track in < 5 minutes
about 0.3 m/s
18 points Completes whole track in 120 sec or less
about 1.1 m/s
19 points Completes whole track in 100 sec or less
about 1.3 m/s
20 points Completes whole track in 70 sec or less
about 1.85 m/s

Potential Point Deductions:

-0.5 points Twitchy steering
-0.5 points Goes wide on curves
-0.5 points Oscillatory step response
-1 point Loose hardware
including car scraping on track
-1 point Hits cone(s)
-0 points Overshoot Natcar Finish Line (6 ft after finish line)
4 second penalty in lap time- just for bragging rights (not used for calculating score)
