Twelfth  Week - April 9-13

Lecture:

We will continue our tour of the thirteen types of single stage amplifiers in Chapter 8 and then go on to multistage amplifiers in Chapter 9. We will not have time to consider each in detail so we will leverage the similarities between MOS and bipolar devices and the symmetry between n-type and p-type to get down to three basis types (plus the emitter regeneration variation of CE). It is important to understand how to quickly analyze each type including effects of dependent sources on Rin and Rout. It is also important to understand the strengths of each connection type as summarized in Table 8.3. This will help us develop multistage amplifiers to interface to various types of sources and loads and also to merge devices in circuits such as cascode in Chapter 9.

Discussion Sections:

Supplement Lecture by presentation common drain MOS amplifier, the following multi-stage amplifiers CS-CS, CS-CE, and CG-CS, and a detailed example of the cascode circuit.

Laboratories:

Experiment #9: Frequency Response.  (Although you could do #10 if the TA's concur.) This is a change due to the fact that we have not covered enough of the material on multistage amplifiers and especially cascode connections. Sorry we did not catch this lack of synchronization earlier.

Homework:

Problem Set 11 covers the different amplifier configurations and their advantages from Chapter 8. Problem Set 12 covers common collector/drain as well as multistage, direct coupling and voltage/current sources.
