WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YORU PATH TO CAL? I was born in Sebastopol CA, a beautiful Hippie and Yuppie enclave in Sonoma County, about an hour north of Berkeley. My father was a Volcanologist (not a Vulcanologist for you trekkies out there) working for Unocal digging geothermal wells to pull heat out of the earth to make electricity and so when I was 5 he was transfered to the Philippines where he and my whole family moved for 4 years. After the Philippines we moved to Indonesia where I lived for 5 years until he finally gave up on the international life and we returned to Sebastopol. I was 14 when we returned and so I did all of my High School at Analy high in Sebastopol. During my senior year, I scoped out a few colleges but very quickly decided to go to Cal and thus only applied here. I thought I wanted to do Physics, but the physics professors at Berkeley turned out to be not so hot teachers, and once I took 61C I never looked back. HOW MUCH PROGRAMMING HAVE YOU DONE (& WHAT LANGUAGES) As with many of you, my first programming was done in 61A with Scheme. I then took 61B and 61C the following semester learning C and Java simultaneously. After that it was only up up up! I learned Verilog in CS150, SQL in CS186, then Javascript and C# during an internship at Microsoft, and finally Python for CS188 (and also for kicks, because Python rocks my socks off). WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES I love movies, I watch probably somewhere between 4 and 10 movies every week. I definitely enjoy silly action films but I can find myself stunned by good cinematography and great writing (go see "There Will Be Blood", you'll know what I'm talking about). I also very recently got in to Star Trek - The Next Generation and I am addicted!! I love some TV Shows (The Wire, Arrested Development, Curb your Enthusiasm) but Star Trek has really blown me away and I can't stop watching it! I also love to program, and will keep trying to do it more on my own time. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TALENTS & SKILLS I can wiggle my ears like Dan, but that's where the talent stops. I guess a skill may be eating? I eat everything. HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING REMARKABLE? HAS ANYTHING MEMORABLE HAPPENED TO YOU? Just this winter break I was in Peru and I climbed the Inca Trail with a massive 10+ Kilo backpack up to 4200 meters (that's high) to eventually end up at the stunningly beautiful Macchu Picchu. The trip was incredible, and I'll probably never do that much physical activity again for a long time. WHAT COMMITMENTS WILL BE CONSUMING YOUR CYCLES THIS SEMESTER? I plan on making a ridiculous awesome Android project for the UI class and hopefully submit it to the Google contest and see how it fares. I will also work on making my sections and labs super fun, and work on one of the 61C projects to make it better than ever (I was thinking MIPS project, but who knows). I also plan on working on a research project with a friend of mine for a team of UCSF students and professors who want a tool to help them collaborate for the massive bio-informatics project they are undertaking. Hopefully we can deliver a tool which they use and helps give a boost to their efforts.
