sp07/Students/info - Course Announcements ======= 1/15/07 Welcome to CS162 for Spring 2007! ======= 1/15/07 Please note that discussion section 101 (Tuesdays 10-11am) will be cancelled after the first meeting on 1/16/07. Please change into another discussion section by the end of the week. ======= 1/17/07 Please note a change in Thomas' office hours from those mentioned in discussion. ======= 1/30/07 The Nachos reader is available starting 1/31 at Copy Central on Hearst for $17.42. ======= 2/2/07 Group Subversion repositories are now available. Please send an email to Thomas with the class account usernames (cs162-XX) of all group members. ======= 2/3/07 Please check your class account email for a password to access the 'Groups' page on the left menu bar of the class homepage. There, you can create a group for each assignment and evaluate your group members at the end of the assignment. ======= 2/5/07 The Nachos tutorial scheduled for 2/6 at 7pm has been CANCELLED. We will be going over Nachos in class on Wednesday. ======= 2/9/07 The signup for Nachos phase 1 design reviews is now online. You can find a link to the signup page on the ``Nachos Phases'' page. ======= 2/12/07 The second course reader (technical papers) is available at the northside Copy Central. The price is $44.69+tax. ======= 2/15/07 Course readings: You should read items 1, 2, 3 but you won't be tested on it. Item 5 may be helpful for Nachos work. You should definitely read item 6. You're responsible for knowing about monitors. Item 7 is background for the class coverage of linkers and loaders. Read it if you need to. (Don't worry about the details about how the IBM 360 does it.) You need to know how linkers and loaders work. ======= 2/21/07 REMINDER - midterm exam 2/28, 7p, 306 Soda. The two problem sets are available in the Homework directory. They are also in the course reader. ======= 2/22/07 Please submit problem set 1 using `submit ps1` on the instructional machines. ======= 2/24/07 1. Prof. Smith will not have office hours on Monday 2/24. Class will be held as usual at 4pm. 2. There WILL be class on Wednesday 2/26, even though there is an exam that evening. 3. The exam may cover material up through what will be covered on Monday, 2/24. Up to date lecture notes will be posted that evening (esp. if you remind Prof. Smith). ======= 2/27/07 The Nachos phase 2 initial design doc deadline has been pushed back ONE day to 2007-03-04 23:59. Also, please sign up for phase 2 design reviews (3/5 to 3/7) ======= 2/28/07 The exams will be handed back in class after they're graded. They *should* be available next week - not sure if we'll have them Monday or Wednesday. ======= 3/4/07 Looks like exams will be handed back on Wednesday. ======= 3/7/07 Exams were handed back. Prof. Smith has the exams that weren't picked up, and will bring them to class (assuming he remembers) for the next week or two, if you want to get yours. ======= 3/13/07 The file ~cs162/Students/jobs will hold any job postings that Prof. Smith has received that seem relevant. A listing for MIPS was just posted. ======= 3/16/07 Please sign up for phase 3 design reviews ======= 3/22/07 Based on requests from people who weren't planning on working over spring break, the due date for Nachos Assignment 3 is postponed by two days, from April 4 until April 6 (11:59pm). The due date for the problem set is unchanged (Monday, April 9) and the midterm date is also unchanged (Wednesday, April 11). ======= 4/2/07 Items 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 in the readings provide backup for the lecture material on I/O devices. I recommend that you skim through it, but you're only responsible for what was covered in lecture, and at a general level of detail. (The expected level of knowledge for the exams was discussed in lecture.) After file and I/O systems, the next topic will be Networking. (Which will be helpful for the next Nachos assignment.) Items 21, 22 and 23 in the readings provide backup for that discussion. ======= 4/8/07 There is a midterm review session on Monday, 4/9 at 7pm in 306 Soda. Don't forget the midterm is Wednesday, 4/11 at 7pm in 306 Soda. ======= 4/10/07 The midterm will cover up through the material on networking. There *will* be a lecture on 4/11, and the lecture material will appear on the last exam (5/7). ======= 4/15/07 Readings: items 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 are background for the lectures on protection, security and encryption. Items 25, 26 and 27 are background for the lectures on performance and "back of the envelope" calculations. Items 28 and 29 are background for the lectures on Virtual Machines and OS Design. I strongly recommend reading 28 and 29. ======= 4/16/07 Exams have been graded and were handed back today. Prof. Smith will bring the exams to class this week and next (if he remembers) - you can pick up your exam then and there if you weren't in class today. ======= 4/16/07 HKN questionaires will be handed out at the end of one of the lectures next week - probably Monday 4/23. ======= 4/23/07 There will be no lecture on Wed. 4/25 - we're well ahead of schedule. Please let Prof. Smith know if you need to meet with him on that day- otherwise, he won't have office hours. ======= 4/28/07 Please make sure evaluations for *all* group assignments are filled in by Thursday, May 3, 2007. Reminder - the third (and last) midterm will be the evening of Monday, May 7 (7pm, 306 Soda). It will be cumulative. It will probably be longer than the other two midterms - probably about two hours. Please double check your homework/project grades - no corrections or complaints will be accepted after 5/7. ======= 5/2/07 All of Prof. Smith's lecture notes have been posted. Let him know if you think something is missing (but check carefully first.) Today's lecture will concern current research in CS, hints for OS design, and comments on Graduate School. This will probably be the last lecture of the semester. ======= 5/3/07 There will be no lecture on Monday, 5/7. The midterm will be at 7pm, 5/7 in 306 Soda, and will probably be around two hours. ======= 5/12/07 Please note that weights used to generate your "total" grade in glookup are meaningless and do not reflect the actual weights used to determine your grade. ======= 5/12/07 Course grades are posted - see ~cs162/Students/grades. By the way - please let Prof. Smith know if you listened to the class podcasts. He'd like to know if they got any use.
