ASSIST: Market Research on GPS System

Course Name: Technology for Living

Project Name: Market Research on GPS System

Student Name: Hiu-Fai Ricky Chan

Objective: To research on the blind

Introduction/Background: The project, GPS system for the Blind, was proposed during Spring 99. An attempt was proposed to use GPS system (Global Positioning System) to assist blind people to navigate through the city. In order to determine the feasibility of the project and acquire enough information to continue the project, a research targeted at the blind people was proposed. It will obtain information on how blind people navigate through the city, how they recognize their ways in the city and how we can help them navigating through the city with the GPS system.

Techinal Detail: A questionaire would be created with the necessary questions we would like to ask the blind people. Interviews would be then conducted with the blind people to complete the questionaire. Progress: The questionaire was created. The place I tried to arrange some interviews was World Institute on Disability (WID) (suggested by the founder of the GPS system project, Terry.) I emailed them two weeks ago, but I received no reply from them so far.

Work to be Done: Arrange the interviews and collect the data. The place you could try was WID (http://www.wid.org) or you could interview any blind persons you know.

Notes: see the questionnaire.
