This variable, which is relevant only to users of International Allegro CL (IACL) supplies the default value for the external-format argument to open, load, and related functions. The allowable values are :euc (Unix only), :mb (i.e. MultiByte format, Windows only), :fat-string and :process-code, :ascii and :8-bit. See the discussion of open in iacl.htm above for the meaning of these values.
